County Durham golf club to create jobs following six-figure refurbishment
A local golf club is creating new jobs after investing a six-figure sum into a major facelift.
Woodham Golf and County Club in Newton Aycliffe has invested £400,000 into a refurbishment programme which has vastly improved facilities. The club was brought back into management by its owners, local firm Hall Construction, after its tenant left the business earlier this year.
Now restaurant manager Michelle Peel has revealed exciting plans to host more events after already taking bookings for private parties. As well the £400,000 spent on the Lakeside restaurant and ‘Green’ room areas, the owners have also invested £250,000 to date on the golf course, its greens and drainage.
In the clubhouse, impressive new bars are complemented by plus new doors, furniture, carpets and wallpaper, while the kitchen has also had a full refurb. The club is already averaging around 100 bookings for Sunday lunches, with local people returning to the popular venue.
Michelle said: “We’re delighted with the refurbishment work which has modernised the clubhouse throughout and it’s really something for our golfers and regular patrons to be proud of. We’re already often exceeding 100 bookings for Sunday lunches while Saturdays are quite busy, and we’re aiming to complement that by increasing footfall during the week.”
Michelle says the club have retained a number of employees to maintain continuity, but have also employed a new kitchen team, including head chef Edwin Adams. Edwin trained as a chef at Middlesbrough College before joining the Army as a chef in 2002, serving in Belize, Canada and Kenya over a 10-year period.
He then worked for Sodexo Contract Catering for five years then left to work at The Station Café/Bar in Richmond, where he became part of an award-winning team, and then had a spell working for Adkins & Cheurfi Agency before joining Woodham.
Michelle added: “We’re delighted with our new team and we’re excited about what Eddy and sous chef Emlyn Hugill will bring to the club. The owners are ambitious and want to create a busy, thriving club that has fantastic food and drinks on offer every day of the week.
“We’re also looking to host birthday parties, wedding receptions, Christenings and business events in the clubhouse, as we now have the facilities to cater for all types of private events.”
Woodham Golf Club have launched an exciting series of Christmas Fayre offers as well as Christmas Day and a New Year’s Eve party night at the club, with traditional festive menus, entertainment and all the trimmings on offer. The club is also looking to soon introduce a new breakfast and lunchtime menu and will shortly be offering a separate evening menu.
