North Tyneside Christmas market to ‘shine a light’ on smaller local businesses

Businesses in Wallsend are being invited to take part in a free Christmas market.

Funded by the Town and High Streets Innovation Programme, The Business Factory, North Tyneside Council’s business support service, will be hosting a Christmas market in Wallsend, exclusively for start-ups and businesses in their early stages operating in the NE28 postcode area.

Held on Saturday 2 December, businesses will be invited to trade and show off their services from Wallsend Market Village, in the Forum Shopping Centre.

The event will aim to highlight these smaller businesses that haven’t been trading for long, or who are currently operating as online businesses through platforms such as eBay and Etsy, giving an opportunity to kickstart their business in the run up to the festive period.

Cllr Carl Johnson, Deputy Mayor of North Tyneside, commented: “We always want to support our local businesses and give them the platform to be successful, particularly those in their early stages, so an event like this offers exactly that opportunity.

“An event like this can shine a light on businesses for residents who may not have come across them otherwise, maybe this business has only traded online until this point, or maybe they’re brand new and just want to highlight what they offer.

“So sign up, come along and help us put on a great event, raise awareness of your business and celebrate Christmas with us.”

In January 2022, the North of Tyne Combined Authority launched the Town and High Street Innovation Programme to support the transformation of key town centres and high streets in the North of Tyne area, in response to both the pandemic and longer-term changes impacting on these local centres.

£1.94m was secured to invest in Wallsend high street, the programme of activity forms part of North Tyneside Council’s Ambition for Wallsend plan, which is built around three key priorities.

  • Making the town centre and its neighbourhoods great places to visit and live by improving the street scene and public spaces and working with partners to make sure people feel safe
  • Making improvements to the quality of housing in the town by renovating poor-quality properties and building new homes
  • Connecting residents to good jobs through further education, transport infrastructure and putting Wallsend on the map for employers.
