New ways to pay at Tyne Tunnels
The operator of the Tyne Tunnels, TT2, is introducing easier ways to pay and letting customers know that their payment system will be unavailable on Saturday 11 November whilst the service upgrade is taking place.
In response to customer feedback, TT2 is enabling tolls to be paid at the click of a smartphone via the free mobile payment systems - Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Many find it more convenient to pay this way because it allows instant payment on debit or credit cards that are pre-stored in Apple or Google wallets on people’s phones – rather than having to manually enter card details.
Whilst the system upgrade works are taking place on Saturday 11 November, TT2’s payment system - including their website, app, and automated payment telephone lines - will be unavailable to pay a toll. There is still an option to pay at one of the thousands of PayPoints in shops throughout the UK, with cash or card, on Saturday 11 November.
To ensure customers are not caught-out or inconvenienced, there will be an extended payment window in place - giving customers extra time to pay. Anyone who drives through the tunnels on Friday 10, Saturday 11 or Sunday 12 November will have until 23:59pm on Tuesday 14 November to pay their toll.
TT2 is encouraging customers to pay for their planned journeys in advance if they are travelling over this period. Advance payments can be made for both guest users and Pre-Paid account holders.
CEO at TT2, Adrian Wallace, said: “Our customers told us they want Apple Pay and Google Pay so we are delivering. We are continuously listening and working to improve the customer experience.
“We apologise for the initial inconvenience that this will cause, but we hope these changes will bring long-term benefits for our customers.
“If you are a Pre-Paid account holder, please ensure you have sufficient funds to cover all of your journeys, as you will not be able to top-up during this period. The toll will be deducted but it will take slightly longer than usual to appear on your account.”
Following the upgrade, Pre-Paid customers who use Auto Top-up will need to re-add their saved card details on to their account. TT2 is contacting customers directly with information on how to do this.
Apple Pay and Google Pay will be added to the extensive list of payment options which include:, over the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, online via the website or on the app with card, via a Pre-Paid account, Auto Top-up or via cash or card at thousands of PayPoints located in shops throughout the UK.
