Two new businesses announced their support to create ten scholarships at Northumbria University.

Students are set to receive a boost from two new corporate supporters – Ribston Ltd and Mott MacDonald Ltd.

Both companies are respected leaders in the Real Estate and Engineering sectors, boasting international profiles and customers. The scholarships will enable undergraduate and postgraduate students from under-represented backgrounds to access and succeed at Northumbria University.

As part of the Higher Education Without Barriers programme, Northumbria is working in partnership with London-based, Ribston Ltd to support nine undergraduate Real Estate scholarships for disadvantaged students. Their support will bring diverse talent into their sector and enable students to pursue their career goals. Mott MacDonald Ltd will support an inaugural postgraduate scholarship in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Technologies.

James Havery, Director at Ribston Ltd said: “Ribston are pleased to provide financial assistance to students at Northumbria. We are great supporters of those coming into our sector who continue to bring ideas, enthusiasm, and diversity. It’s a great scheme operated by Northumbria, and we are very happy to be able to support it.”

Lynn Johnson, Assistant Professor in Built Environment, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the support of Ribston Ltd through their generous donation. Their support of our students is an investment in the future of both Northumbria University and the Surveying profession.”

Sarah May, Senior Project Manager / Newcastle Cross Sector Advisory Team Lead at Mott MacDonald Ltd shared: “We are delighted to offer the Mott MacDonald Ltd Scholarship for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Technologies MSc. This reflects our commitment to improving society by delivering social outcomes and sustainable solutions in everything we do. We are excited to support and collaborate with the scholarship recipient, who shares our vision of creating a greener and better future for all.”

Scholarship beneficiary Kurtis said: “I’ve always been passionate about the environment and the need to preserve it for every species on earth. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to make a genuine difference in the world after the completion of my degree. This scholarship will make a huge difference to my educational experience.”

The scholarships continue the progress of Northumbria’s successful Higher Education Without Barriers programme. With support from alumni, businesses, and charitable partners, it provides a range of financial initiatives, mental health & well-being services, and community-based projects, to make participation and progression in higher education more achievable for motivated students, regardless of their circumstances.

Thanks to generous donations of money and time, the Fund has raised over £2.6 million, created 150 new scholarships, and supported more than 2,000 students since it launched in January 2022.
