Change of river for cost and project management experts

COST and project management experts Steel River Consultants (SRC) have launched a Newcastle base.

The company, headquartered in Teesside, but with offices in Glasgow and the Midlands, has opened a new office in Hoults Yard, Byker, after identifying Tyneside as an area of potential growth.

When established in Stockton-on-Tees in 2010, SRC provided health and safety services to the renewables sector and the construction industry. The company has since expanded the services it offers and the sectors in which it works.

The Newcastle offices will provide cost and project management services to both new and existing clients.

Director Gary Marshall explained: “In 2017 company founder Graham Tyerman contacted me with a proposal to establish a new division of SRC, providing cost and project management services. We’ve since worked to build an extensive client base across a wide range of sectors, including commercial, education, housing and renewables, with clients including local authorities, housing associations, Academy Trusts and private companies.

“We felt it was time to move into Newcastle as we have existing clients based here and we know there are other companies and organisations on Tyneside that could benefit from our knowledge and experience.”

Senior Cost Manager Ben Tremewan, who has joined Gary in the new Hoults Yard office, said: “Newcastle is a busy, vibrant city with so much investment and development, both recently and in-plan – this offers huge potential for us. The city also has two well respected universities, which will be important to us in terms of recruitment.” Ben is from Bishop Auckland and completed an HNC in building construction technology before graduating from Northumbria University with a degree in quantity surveying.

Despite only opening the office at the beginning of October, SRC is already looking to recruit four more team members – cost managers and project managers, from assistant to senior level.

Gary, who has more than 30 years of experience delivering cost and project management services for both public and private sector clients, believes the Newcastle team will continue to grow once established, providing high quality, bespoke service provision to clients wanting to develop their property portfolio.

He said: “We’re still relatively small compared to the large consultancies working in the same area – which means we can tailor our service provision to meet the exact needs of our clients. We are known, and have built a reputation for, really listening to our clients and understanding their individual needs. We’re able to provide a team with extensive experience – with each client assigned a director from the SRC team, and not just junior staff with less experience.”

Originally from Teesside, Gary also studied quantity surveying at Northumbria University and has worked at some of the industry’s largest regional and national cost and project management consultancies, before founding SRC.

Gary and Ben are delighted with their new workspace. Ben said: “The yard is a busy, vibrant place with a real buzz about it – it’s easy to get to with plenty of parking and there are plenty of places to go for a coffee or something to eat. It’s the perfect place to grown our business.”
