Gillingham schoolchildren learn what their classroom is made of with David Wilson Homes
Schoolchildren from Wyke Primary School in Gillingham have been supporting their learning this term with a special tour of a David Wilson Homes development in Dorset.
A group of 30 pupils in Year 2 were invited to the leading housebuilder’s Niveus Walk development in Shaftesbury so they could gain some insight into the construction process and receive some practical help with their current topic of ‘what is my classroom made of?’.
The 6- and 7-year-olds were taken around the site by David Wilson Homes’ Site Manager, Brad Freer, who spoke to the group about the materials needed to make a home (or a classroom). Pupils were shown around one of the development’s new properties, and even had the chance to see the machinery involved.
Polly Albone, Year 2 teacher, said: “It is great for the children to support their learning with practical visits, and we were grateful that the David Wilson team on site were so welcoming. The class loved seeing the machinery and really enjoyed going into the house to see all the different building materials used.”
David Wilson Homes is committed to supporting the communities in which it is building, and Site Manager, Brad, said he was thrilled to be able to invite the youngsters on site.
He said: “It’s extremely important that we work in tandem with the communities where we are building new homes, and it’s been great to work with Wyke Primary and be able to show this fantastic group of kids around Niveus Walk today. It was great to see the enthusiasm on their faces, especially when we showed them one of our forklifts here!”
Wyke Primary School on Deane Avenue in Gillingham teaches children from the ages of 4 to 11, and provides a happy, stimulating learning environment where every child is valued.
