Sunderland audiology business move into new premises amidst continued growth

A Sunderland audiology business has moved into bigger premises as part of its continuing growth.

Northern Spire Hearing Services has almost doubled its floor space after moving into a larger premises at the North East BIC. The company was launched back in 2020 when audiologist Dan Wilkinson spotted a gap in the market while working as an audiologist for the NHS.

He initially only offered home visits to clients, but demand for his expertise quickly led to the decision to establish a permanent base where he could help more clients and offer a wider range of services.

Fast forward three years and the business has gone from strength to strength and has moved into the next stage of its expansion plan.

“Being a new business start up we began small and have been gradually building it up,” said Dan. “In the first unit we just had one big room, now we have two separate rooms, with a waiting room, providing more privacy for our patients. We want to keep slowly expanding, depending how things go, we may look to take someone on in the future. We want to grow slowly but surely.”

The practice offers a range of ear services, including hearing tests, ear wax removal and hearing aid sales and repairs. Having had success based at the BIC, Dan was keen to stay on site and the BIC were able to accommodate a move to a bigger unit.

Dan said: “The BIC is a really good base for a business. Its location is quite central, close to Sunderland city centre but also close to Washington, Gateshead, Newcastle and the wider region. It’s quite easy for people to get to us being so close to main roads and there’s plenty of parking close to the door for visitors, which is a big help as I have a lot of elderly patients.

“The BIC were great in helping me with the move, they had a few options for bigger units and as soon as I’d made the decision to move there was only few weeks turnaround for me to move across. It all ran really smoothly.”

The BIC offers a range of flexible and affordable workspaces in Sunderland, Washington and Darlington.

Donna Surtees, centre manager at the BIC, said: “Northern Spire Hearing Services is a great example of the benefit of the flexible nature of our spaces. Whether companies need to upsize, downsize or move to a hybrid model of working we have solutions available. It’s great to see how Dan has established his business since opening at the BIC, I look forward to seeing what the future holds for the company.”
