Building for a brighter future

A transformative housing project is breaking ground in Hebburn, promising a new era of community living and support for residents.

The £31 million Extra Care housing development, a partnership between northern housing association Karbon Homes and South Tyneside Council, will deliver 95 modern apartments, including 20 two-bed and 75 one-bed homes, with 17 specialist dementia apartments.

Zoey Hawthorne, assistant director of development delivery at Karbon Homes, said: “We’re looking forward to work getting underway at Hebburn as we begin the delivery of this exciting development.

“It’s fantastic to be partnering with South Tyneside Council to ensure we deliver a scheme that meets the needs of the local area and enables its residents to live life to the full.”

Located on the site of the former Lincoln Court, the project aims to provide affordable housing for individuals requiring care, while promoting independent living.

Led by Robertson Construction North East, the development will feature a public bistro, a wellbeing suite with a hair salon and communal spaces designed to foster social interaction.

The scheme is part-funded by Homes England through Karbon Homes’ strategic partnership.

The project is the first of several planned by the partnership to address the shortage of specialist housing in the borough. It aligns with South Tyneside Council’s Adult Social Care Accommodation Strategy, which supports individuals needing extra care to live independently within their communities.

Councillor Ruth Berkley added: “It’s exciting to see work getting underway on this development, which will allow not just our older people, but younger adults with care needs to live in the community with care and support.

“One of our key ambitions is for people to stay healthy and well throughout their lives, and provision of this specialist, affordable accommodation will help us deliver on that ambition.”
