Alnwick filmmakers spotlight sustainable spearfishing
A new short film has captured the essence of the North East’s spearfishing culture, celebrating the region’s natural beauty while promoting sustainable seafood practices.
Created by Alnwick filmmakers Helen Burt and Pierre Melion, Trigger Fish showcases the unique spearfishing opportunities along the North East coast, combining striking footage of marine ecosystems with insights into responsible harvesting.
Helen said: “Our goal is to inspire people to explore the incredible opportunities right on their doorstep.
“We want to showcase not just spearfishing as a thrilling adventure, but also as a way to gather fresh local seafood while respecting the delicate marine environment.”
Part of the Tide to Table initiative, the film illustrates how spearfishing supports minimal-impact fishing by taking only what's needed. Beyond food, Trigger Fish also highlights the mental health benefits of water immersion, sharing stories of personal growth through ocean experiences.
As the first in a series by Tide to Table, the film aims to inspire appreciation for the North East's coastal resources, connecting audiences with the value of sustainable practices from ocean to plate.
Pierre added: "Around 70 per cent of seafood caught in the UK is exported.
“We want to ensure that fresh, local seafood is something everyone can enjoy and appreciate, whether you’re an experienced diver or just a seafood lover looking for the best catch in the area.”
