Competition inspires young entrepreneurs
A long-running initiative encouraging enterprise among schoolchildren in County Durham has returned, challenging students to reimagine the high street.
Future Business Magnates (FBM), organised by Durham County Council's Business Durham, is marking its 20th year with students from 13 schools creating innovative business ideas to transform their local communities.
This year’s theme, ‘Reimagining the High Street,’ tasks participants with designing businesses that attract people back to town centres, focusing on areas like arts, food, entertainment, or innovation.
Supported by local companies including Waterstons, Robertson Homes, and Co-op Distribution, the year-long competition aims to raise aspirations among young people and aligns with the County Durham Inclusive Economic Strategy’s focus on fostering career and business success.
Councillor Elizabeth Scott, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for economy and partnerships, said: “In the 20 years since this fantastic competition first launched, more than 2,000 students from almost every secondary school in County Durham have taken part.
“This is a fantastic achievement, but also reflects our commitment to encouraging enterprise in young people and raising aspirations among future generations.
“By providing a range of innovative opportunities and resources, we are helping to create brighter futures for students and future economic prosperity for the county.”
The winners will be announced at a celebratory ceremony at the end of the academic year.
