Merit builds on success with hospital project
A Northumberland-based construction firm has been appointed to deliver an emergency care unit at Bedford Hospital.
Merit will design and build the £3.6 million Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit for Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with completion set for July 2025.
Manufacturing of off-site components will take place at Merit’s Cramlington factory.
The new unit will include consultation rooms, clinical management rooms, examination rooms, assessment areas and supporting services, using Merit’s UltraPOD® SFS variant – a prefabricated solution designed for rapid healthcare facility delivery.
Melanie Banks, director of redevelopment and strategic planning at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The development of the new SDEC will allow us to assess, diagnose and treat a high volume of urgent patients each day and in a timely manner, alleviating the pressure on our emergency department.
“This will improve the patient experience and negate the requirement to be admitted into the hospital.
“Given the significant pressures on urgent and emergency care services up and down the country, an efficient design and speed of construction delivery has been essential.”
Merit has delivered multiple healthcare projects nationwide, including Berwick’s new £35 million community hospital and a therapy-led rehabilitation unit in Norwich.
Last September, Merit also announced its appointment to design and fit-out a multi-million flagship NHS Medicines Manufacturing Centre in Seaton Delaval, Northumberland, which is expected to create around 150 jobs.
Tony Wells, Merit chief executive, added: "We are thrilled to bring our innovative off-site construction approach to this project.
“Our focus is on delivering a facility that prioritises the needs of patients and healthcare providers, ensuring they benefit from outstanding care in a modern, expertly designed environment.
“Through close collaboration with Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, we are committed to a seamless and swift delivery that enhances the healthcare experience for all.”
