Assystem expands UK footprint with takeover

A global nuclear engineering firm has strengthened its UK presence with the acquisition of a construction company.

Paris-headquartered Assystem has acquired Whitley Bay-based Mactech Energy Group, a nuclear construction operator with a £16 million turnover in 2024. 

Bosses say the deal will strengthen and “accelerate” Assystem’s capabilities, as the UK prepares for up to 24GW of new nuclear projects in coming decades.

Christian Jeanneau, Assystem executive vice president international, project management and digital, said: “I am delighted to welcome Mactech to the Assystem group. 

“Like Assystem, they are driven by a core mission: to accelerate the delivery of nuclear projects and help the UK drive its energy transition.”

Mactech, which has supported UK nuclear sites for more than 37 years, will continue operating independently while bolstering Assystem’s capacity to deliver on the construction aspects of projects in the new build, decommissioning and defence nuclear sectors.

The company will also continue to support its nuclear industry clients at Hinkley Point C, the Magnox fleet and on SMR projects.
