Ryder posts strong results despite ‘tough’ climate

A Newcastle-based international design practice has posted strong financial results, reflecting its resilience and diverse portfolio despite economic challenges.

Ryder Architecture, which employs 350 staff across its UK and international offices, reported a UK turnover of £31.6 million for the financial year ending April 2024, a 4.6 per cent increase from the previous year, with pre-tax profits rising by 60.2 per cent to £2.4 million. 

Mark Thompson, managing partner, said: “It’s been a tough geopolitical climate for all businesses. 

“We feel like we’ve been treading water for the past two years as clients continue, understandably, to err on the side of caution amid inflation, interest rates pressures and increased bureaucracy and legislation in response to Grenfell. 

“However, there’s now a sense that projects are starting to progress, but still not at the pace required to generate long term confidence.”

Ryder’s portfolio spans the UK and as far afield as Australia and Canada, covering sectors including education, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, office, residential and science. 

The firm currently has several UK projects underway, including London regeneration schemes, a new hotel chain and the National Rehabilitation Centre for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. 

The practice also maintains long-term partnerships with the Ministry of Defence and Scottish Futures Trust, providing a number of projects north of the border.

Closer to home, Ryder is also leading the design team on the regeneration of East Pilgrim Street in Newcastle's city centre.
