Home of Golf unveils greener future strategy

St Andrews Links Trust has unveiled a strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. 

The plan is already driving significant changes, from electric golf buggies to composting grass cuttings for local use.

In its report, Our Journey to a Greener Future, the Trust outlined goals such as sourcing 100 per cent renewable energy by 2025, diverting 99 per cent of waste from landfill and enhancing biodiversity on its estate. 

Additional initiatives include the appointment of sustainability ambassadors, a coastal erosion management plan, water refill stations and energy-efficient heat pumps.

Neil Coulson, chief executive, said: “As the Home of Golf and the custodians of the historic Old Course, we not only take seriously our duty to protect the land but to lead the way in securing a sustainable future for golf.  

“We know there are significant challenges from climate change, but by addressing these head on, having a plan and leading by example, St Andrews Links Trust can help take a leadership role in the sustainability of golf across the UK.”
