Rail station upgrade reaches 'big milestone'
Work on a £14.5 million travel hub revamp has reached a “big milestone”, a regeneration boss has said.
A 92-tonne bridge has been installed at Eaglescliffe railway station, near Stockton.
The 56-metre-long structure – lifted into place by contractor BAM – will connect rail users to the station’s island platform, an existing car park and a planned vehicle bay.
Officials say the development will “transform the travel experience (by) creating a more inclusive railway network for the Tees Valley”.
The scheme has been backed by £9.2 million from Tees Valley Combined Authority, £3.25 million from Network Rail and £2 million from the Department for Transport.
Ben Houchen, Tees Valley mayor, said: “This lift marks a big milestone in getting this project completed.
“Eaglescliffe offers a crucial link to major stations to the south, and its access has been below par for far too long.
“This project, and the work going on around the station, will make things better and simpler for people working at fantastic firms on the nearby Durham Lane Industrial Estate, and for everyone who wants to use Eaglescliffe for travel.”
Work to add a second car park at the station is being led by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.
Councillor Bob Cook, leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and combined authority cabinet member, said: “These improvements should be another draw for businesses looking to invest in Durham Lane Industrial Estate while serving some of the vital international businesses we have on the site.”
Anna Weeks, Network Rail North and East route principal programme sponsor, added: “This achievement marks an important milestone in improving accessibility at Eaglescliffe station.”
