Port eyes global success after record steel imports
A port operator says it is steeling itself for international growth after record-breaking results.
Peel Ports Group has unveiled plans to transform Port of Liverpool into a “global hub for steel”.
The blueprint comes after the trade hub recorded best-ever bulk import figures in 2024.
More than 700,000 tonnes of bulk steel – from countries including South Korea, Vietnam and Turkey – were processed at the site last year.
The number was more than 50,000 tonnes higher than the port’s previous record.
And bosses say the site, which earlier this year announced the opening of a £2 million deepwater bulk berth to welcome larger vessels, is primed to further boost import numbers thanks to a new 200,000sq ft steel coil and precious metals storage base.
Phil Hall, Peel Ports Group’s Mersey port director, said: “We’re thrilled to achieve a record-breaking year for steel imports.
“The figures speak for themselves, showing the work we’re doing to meet our ambition of cementing Liverpool as the leading UK hub providing vital commodities to a range of industries.
“That’s further supported by our dedication to investing in the port’s infrastructure, market reach, our port-centric services and our expert teams.
“We look forward to building on this success with customers.”
