Plans approved for city’s first indoor padel club

A historic Sheffield brewery is set for a new lease of life as plans for the city’s first indoor padel club move forward. 

Developer Capital & Centric has partnered with Club de Padel to create a five-court venue featuring a shop, café and bar, transforming part of the long-dormant Cannon Brewery, in Neepsend.

The pop-up club will occupy a renovated section of the brewery while wider redevelopment plans take shape to restore the brewery to its former glory.

Tom Wilmot, joint managing director of Capital & Centric, said: “Bringing padel to Cannon Brewery is a great way of getting people back into the disused spaces while we get stuck into transforming the site.

“We’re expecting it to be another big hit.”

James Wigglesworth, co-founder of Club de Padel, whose debut club in Manchester has proven hugely popular, added: “We’re looking forward to opening our second site in this incredible space. 

“Sheffield has all the ingredients for us, and this building in Neepsend has bags of character, which felt perfect for our urban, inclusive club.”

Capital & Centric is leading a £200 million regeneration of the brewery site, working alongside Sheffield City Council and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, which granted £11.67 million in funding. 

Officials say the masterplan includes 550 homes, a new urban park and a public square with spaces for pop-up events.

Capital & Centric has further live projects in Buxton, Wolverhampton, Gateshead, Stoke-on-Trent and Cambridge.

In Sheffield, the company has already transformed Eyewitness Works into modern homes, a project that also served as the backdrop for Channel 4’s Big Interiors Battle in 2023, featuring AJ Odudu.
