North East leads the way with 5GIR programme
The North East has been recognised as a leader in digital transformation.
The region’s 5G Innovation Regions (5GIR) programme, led by Sunderland City Council in collaboration with the North East Combined Authority, secured the Place-Based Impact Award at the Future Networks Awards 2025.
The initiative, backed by £3.7 million from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, has delivered four projects across transport, logistics, creative industries and agritech.
They include a private 5G network at Port of Tyne to improve logistics; real-time traffic management for major industrial sites such as Nissan and Port of Tyne; immersive digital experiences in Sunderland’s cultural sector, including the Sunderland EXPO Pavilion; and smart farming solutions with Newcastle University.
Barney Smith, Perform Green founder and chief executive, said: “The 5GIR programme is not only driving technological innovation but is ensuring the benefits of advanced connectivity are felt across industries and communities.
“This is a fantastic milestone, and I am proud to see the North East leading the way.”
Patrick Melia, Sunderland City Council chief executive and North East Combined Authority digital lead, added: “We are incredibly proud that our ground-breaking 5GIR projects are putting the North East on the map as a trailblazer.
“With support from Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, we are leveraging next-generation connectivity to create new industry clusters, fuel economic growth and cement our region’s reputation as a leader in advanced digital solutions.”
