With around 25,000 students from 80 different countries, Birmingham City University is one of the largest universities in the UK and our popularity has grown significantly in recent years. Between 2008 and 2010, we had the highest rise in UCAS applications of any Midlands’ university. Situated in Birmingham, the UK’s second city, we are proud of our strong links and close collaboration with the region which dates back to 1843. The University puts more than £270 million into the regional economy, £180 million into Birmingham alone, and supports thousands of jobs. Our focus on providing practice-based learning is designed to create professionally qualified graduates with the skills employers tell us they need. Our courses are accredited by over 40 professional bodies and we regularly involve businesses in course development and delivery. We’ve worked with over 5,000 businesses, including household names like Apple, Cartier, the BBC, Rolls-Royce and CISCO. As a result we’re ranked in the UK top 20 alongside Oxford, Cambridge and the London School of Economics for placing our students in graduate-level jobs. Thanks to on-going investment, including a brand new £180 million City Centre Campus, our facilities are second to none. Students learn in realistic environments that replicate the workplaces they hope to enter – from mock operating theatres, a virtual building site, courtrooms and classrooms to state-of-the-art video production suites, jewellery workshops and photographic studios. This commitment to the learning experience and what has been described as ‘Outstanding Support for Students’ was recognised nationally in the prestigious 2010 Times Higher Education Awards. We’re not just about teaching, but are also home to ‘world-class’ and in some cases ‘world-leading’ research. Our researchers are making significant discoveries and partnering local, national and global organisations to provide solutions to contemporary commercial, scientific and social issues. This research has an impact in areas as diverse as mental health policy, criminal justice, linguistics, low carbon technology and planning.
